Asrai is Breaking the Chains! The twin sisters Margriet and Karin Mol are the founders of the Dutch Gothic Rock band Asrai. Margriet is an extraordinary passionate and expressive singer. Besides Asrai, she participated on several recordings. Karin is the drummer and driving force behind the band. Manon joined Asrai since 2005 what was on the beginning of breakthrough after releasing Asrai’s single Pale Light which one was often on The Box and MTV. This resulted in a several European Tours as well a tour in Mexico. End of the year Asrai will celebrate their 30th years of existence. And are back again to their roots of a girl band.

MARGRIET MOL-SINGER OF ASRAI

 

 1. What message do you want to give to your fans and the world by joining the BTC project?

,,I work for a long time now with (homeless) youngsters, it's inspirational to see how strong they can be, the real survivors, but also a lot who lived a long life in fear. I know what kind of damage it brings to a life. I like the message of freedom, because I believe in freedom and in making your own choices. Freedom to be different, freedom to get back on track and discover who you are. And it's a big kick that a motor club is your big `huggiebear' and protector.''

 

2. As a singer, will you also write lyrics for the BTC project? Any ideas already?

,,Well we wrote some lyrics and it's inspired on the explanations and stories what we hear about sexual abuse and domestic violence. I hear a lot of stories, of isolation and low self-esteem and self-destruction what's a legacy of abuse. We all need a friend and in a time of fear we need a lot of them (on wheels).''

 

 3. How will you motivate the fans of ASRAI to support the BTC project?

 

With our support I hope to raise more awareness for B.A.C.A. and the amazing work they do. It is time that we become more and more aware of the people around of us and a little bit less of (just) ourselves. Children who have been victimized by abuse and domestic violence, often live in an isolated situation which is difficult to get out of. Being ashamed of the situation and loyalty to parents makes it difficult to break this pattern. The way B.A.C.A. works is great as it gives the children strength and helps them to build up a life again and regain trust.

It all starts with having faith in change, regaining confidence and trust, and break the chains of abuse. All the stories speak for themselves, and it is great to see that the members of B.A.C.A. take the chance to and are willing to stand up for these children. 

Welk bericht wil je de fans en de wereld geven met je deelname aan het BTC project?

,,Ik werk al een hele tijd met (dakloze) jongeren en jong-volwassenen, Het is inspirerend om te zien hoe sterk die kunnen zijn, de echte “survivors” maar ook velen die al lang in angst leven. Ik weet hoeveel schade dat aanricht. De boodschap van vrijheid vind ik belangrijk want ik geloof in vrijheid en het maken van je eigen keuzes. Vrijheid om anders te zijn, vrijheid om je leven weer op te pakken en te ontdekken wie je (echt) bent.

Het is een enorme kick dat een motorclub tegelijkertijd je knuffelbeer kan zijn maar tevens je bescherming.”

Ga jij, als zangeres, ook teksten schrijven voor het BTC project? Al ideeen?

,,We hebben wat teksten geschreven die geïnspireerd zijn door de uitleg en verhalen die we horen over sexueel misbruik en huiselijk geweld. Verhalen over isolement, een lage eigenwaarde en zelfvernietiging wat het resultaat is van misbruik. In tijden van angst hebben we allemaal een vriend (op wielen) nodig en daar zijn er nooit genoeg van”

Hoe ga je de fans van Asrai motiveren om het BTC project te steunen?

Met onze steun hoop ik meer bewustwording te creëren voor B.A.C.A. en het geweldige werk dat zij doen. Het is tijd dat we ons meer bewust worden van de mensen om ons heen en iets minder van (alleen) onszelf. Kinderen en jongeren die slachtoffer zijn van misbruik en huiselijk geweld, leven vaak ik een isolement wat moeilijk te doorbreken is. Schaamte voor de situatie en loyaliteit naar ouders maakt het lastig te doorbreken. Het mooie uitgangspunt van de aanpak van BACA is dat het kinderen de kracht geeft en helpt om weer een leven op te bouwen en vertrouwen terug te krijgen. Het begint allemaal met geloven in verandering, weer (zelf-) vertrouwen te krijgen en de ketting van misbruik te doorbreken. De verhalen spreken voor zich en het is geweldig om te zien dat B.A.C.A. de kans krijgt om daarin iets te kunnen en mogen betekenen voor deze kinderen.

MANON VAN DER HIDDE-KEYBOARD PLAYER OF ASRAI

1. What is for you the most important reason to join the BTC project?

 ,,In my work I see the results of domestic violence and child abuse every day. With this project we can combine a very important part of our work with something else close to our heart; music. In this BTC project we can give voice to all those stories.''

2. What musical influence/background will you bring into the project?

,,Our background is gothic rock and our influences come from everyday life. All that we hear see and live creates something.''

3. What will be the main focus for your band ASRAI this year?

,,Getting back to our base, make it stable again and start from there. We still have lots to discover, music to make and songs to write.''

 

Wat is jouw voornaamste redden om deel te nemen aan het BTC project?

,,In mijn werk zie ik dagelijks de resultaten van huiselijk geweld en kindermishandeling. Met dit project kunnen wij een belangrijk deel van ons dagelijks werk combineren met onze andere passie: muziek. In dit BTC project kunnen we al deze verhalen een stem geven.”

Welke muzikale invloed of achtergrond breng je mee in dit project?

,,Onze achtergrond is gothic rock en onze invloeden komen vanuit ons dagelijks leven. Alles wat we horen, zien en beleven creëert iets nieuws.”

 

Waar ligt de voornaamste aandacht voor Asrai dit jaar?

,,Terug naar de basis, die stabiel maken en van daaruit opbouwen. Er is nog zoveel te ontdekken, muziek te maken en nummers te schrijven.”

KARIN MOL-DRUMMER OF ASRAI

1. What does it mean to you to be able to be part of the BTC project?

,,The BTC project is a unique project with all good musicians from all kinds of different corners of the non-main stream music. To be part of this BTC project is a great way to approach making music in a different way and a perfect way to give attention to a subject what causes a lot of grief in society. A lot of people have hidden scars caused by abuse. In our way we see in our professions what abuse does to children, and let's not forget the adults who had to endure this abuse during their childhood. We need to break the chains.''

 

2. Were you already familiar with the work of B.A.C.A.?

,,Yes I was, familiar with B.A.C.A., and I think it's great that they give children back their place where they can be safe, by just being there for them..... We all need a big sister or brother once in a while''

 

3. What can we expect from your band ASRAI this year.

,,At the moment we're getting back on track again, quite recently our guitarist and bass player left. So that really brought us back to basic and we had to make a decision what we wanted to do. It was clear for us that we didn't wanted to stop, but we didn't want to go on as we did before. Years ago we met the English guitar player Jacqui Taylor and we had a connection straight away. So we didn't have to think long to contact her to ask her if she wanted to join Asrai. And I'm happy to announce that 15th April we have our first gig together. At the end of the year we have our Asrai 30th anniversary, so we're planning our opportunities how to celebrate this in a nice way.'' 

Wat betekent het voor jou om onderdeel te kunnen zijn van het BTC project?

,,Het BTC project is een uniek project met allemaal uitstekende muzikanten uit verschillende uithoeken van de “non-main stream” muziekscene. Om hier onderdeel van uit te maken is een geweldige manier om muziek op een andere manier te benaderen en de perfecte manier om een onderwerp, dat veel verdriet in de maatschappij veroorzaakt, aandacht te geven. Er zijn veel mensen met verborgen littekens die veroorzaakt zijn door misbruik.

 Wij zien in ons beroep ook wat misbruik met kinderen doet en laten we vooral de volwassenen niet vergeten die misbruik in hun jeugd hebben moeten doorstaan. Die ketting moeten we doorbreken!”

Was je al bekend met het werk van B.A.C.A.?

,,Ja, dat was me bekend. Ik vind het geweldig dat zij kinderen weer een eigen, veilige plek plek bieden door er voor hen te zijn… We hebben allemaal, op enig moment, wel een grote broer of zus nodig. ”

 

Wat kunnen we dit jaar nog verwachten van Asrai?

,,Momenteel zijn we de boel weer op rit aan het zetten, vrij recentelijk heeft onze gitarist en bassist afscheid genomen wat ons weer redelijk “terug bij af” bracht. We werden daardoor gedwongen keuzes te maken en kwamen al snel tot de beslissing dat we niet wilden stoppen maar ook dat we niet op de oude voet door wilden gaan.

Jaren geleden ontmoetten we de Engelse gitarist Jacqui Taylor en dat klikte gelijk. We hebben er niet lang over nagedacht om haar te vragen zich aan te sluiten bij Asrai en we zijn erg verheugd om aan te kunnen kondigen dat we 15 april ons eerste gezamenlijk concert zullen geven.

Eind dit jaar vieren we ons 30-jarig bestaan en we zijn al druk bezig om te bedenken hoe we dat, op een geweldige manier, kunnen gaan vieren.”
